Salvation Army Prepared to Respond as Tropical Storm Bill Makes Landfall in Texas

Dallas, Texas (June 16, 2015) – The Salvation Army fleet of mobile kitchens and disaster teams are prepared and ready to respond after Tropical Storm Bill made landfall along the Texas coast on Matagorda Island at 11:45 AM CDT on Tuesday.

Emergency Disaster Services staff continues to monitor weather conditions in anticipation of torrential rain and flash flooding affecting already saturated areas of Texas following record May rainfall.

The Texas Division has placed disaster units on stand-by and has 38 mobile canteens in the state, 2 field kitchens, and several specialized disaster units -- such as a laundry unit and disaster communications unit. At this point the division remains largely on stand-by as the storm continues to move ashore and the propensity for flooding is assessed. Even at this advanced stage The Salvation Army is collaborating with emergency management groups at local, county and state levels in order to be prepared should relief efforts be necessary.

About The Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services:
“The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian church. Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.” While every disaster is unique and creates its own special needs, the core of The Salvation Army's disaster program consists of several basic services. And while these services address many of the typical needs of a disaster survivor, Salvation Army disaster relief is also flexible. Our services are adapted to the specific needs of individuals and communities and scalable according to the magnitude of the disaster.
